I studied briefly with Grandmaster Kim when I first got to New York. He is an observant teacher who studied under Tae Kwon Do founder General Choi and runs a strong, disciplined traditional Taekwon-Do dojang. I was looking for something a little different, however, which led me to Hapkido.

I trained over many years in the Korean martial arts of Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido, most recently with Sabumnim Yong Ji In at World Martial Arts center in New York, though I would not claim more than a thorough instruction in the basics, from excellent teachers.

I spent the longest amount of time with this dojang, and may return at some point. It’s the best dojang I know of in the city, and is both a rigorous physical and relaxed spiritual journey.

In Chicago, Master Tae Michul led the most intense workouts I have ever participated in. Eight hours of nonstop martial arts each week, plus more time at home learning forms.
